Take a look at the LDAP addon : LDAP – CUBA Platform It uses spring-ldap library to connect to LDAP servers.

Yuriy, thanks for the quick answer. I checked the addon, it seems like it would solve the task, however it is only available for versions 6.8 and 6.9. I am currently using 6.6, is there a chance to install this addon for 6.6 version somehow?
This addon uses new authentication features of 6.7 and 6.8 releases and cannot be easily ported to 6.6
