(1) Is there a more general schedule for the version support time frames?
(2) How long will version 7 be supported?
(3) Is there a planned release cylce or some kind of long term support?
(4) Generally will new versions be downward compatible?

To answer your question:
Free maintenance is provided for 5 years for each latest minor version. E.g. 6.8 is not the latest minor version of CUBA 6 and we don’t have an obligation to keep it maintained (however we do it time to time). The latest minor version for CUBA 6 is 6.10 and it will be actively supported for 5 years since its release date till 27 Sept 2023.
Commercial maintenance is possible for any version of CUBA, not older than 10 years. So, for versions 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, … 6.9, 7.0, 7.1 we provide commercial maintenance. Contact us if you are interested in this option.
End of Life happens after 10 years, meaning that such versions are not supported even on commercial basis.
In this context maintenance means fixing critical security vulnerabilities. Another subject is “feature backporting”, which is not regulated within the maintenance scope. If you want some feature to be ported from later version to one of the pervious ones - let us know and we will provide you information about ability to port the requested feature and a quote for that if it is possible.
As for version 7, currently the latest minor version is 7.2. It was issued on March 01, 2020, hence, will last till March, 2025. Then you will be able to extend it as a commercial service for another 5 years.
